Tim Bergling is known around the world by many pseudonyms and stage names—Tim Berg, Tom Hangs, and Ashwin are a few— but most notably, Bergling works under the defining title Avicii. The Swedish-native, who ranked sixth on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs list last year, is enjoying the success created by his international hit “Levels,” which sampled the late Etta James’s tune “Something’s Got a Hold On Me.”
Avicii told Maxumi Magazine, a United Kingdom publication, that he pulled inspiration from his older siblings’ eclectic taste in music as a teenager. Also, collaborating with veteran House and Electro artists like Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto and Eric Prydz, enabled Avicii to enter into a company and mentorship of legends. A fresh-faced 22-year-old with trademark Swedish genetics—blonde hair, fair skin, ice blue eyes— Avicii’s style is pure House, boasting heavy beats and atmospheric instrumentation that always builds up to a euphoric climax.
Avicii’s foremost appeal is his live shows. Rolling Stone magazine said Avicii’s set at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is a must see for all in attendance. Because Avicii is still relatively new to the game—he began releasing music in 2008—his fan base exists largely in the underground. His fresh energy is exemplified by his performance, which laces his unearthly remix abilities with his innovative production to create a mood that elevates the audience both physically and mentally.
A turning point for Avicii’s career came in 2010 when he signed with EMI, making him part of one of the largest record label families in the world. This would open endless possibilities for huge collaborations.
The song “Sunshine,” a collaboration with global music superstar David Guetta, earned Avicii and Guetta a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2011.
2012 is and will be a defining year for Avicii. Because he experienced such a rapid rise to success, he must prove his ability to stay relevant and in demand. He is scheduled to perform and headline at some of the largest music festivals around the world this year.
If he can nail the live circuit in 2012 by thrilling audiences and keeping fans engaged then he is sure to leave a permanent imprint on the global music community.
